St. Augustine Surf Culture
New Histories of St. Augustine

After finding an 1915 article in the St. Augustine Record that references surfing, those of us at the St. Augustine Historical Society realized that one of our favorite St. Augustine pastimes has been around far longer than we thought. Staff members conducted oral history interviews and created a digital surf culture community on Facebook to facilitate conversations.
The St. Augustine Surf Culture and History Museum is now open! From soul surfers to local legends to shapers and surf shop owners, our museum reflects not only the history of surfing in the United States but importantly allows the surf community to have agency in the presentation of their lived experiences. The interactive museum interprets over fifty oral histories, hundreds of historical images, film, music, artifacts, memorabilia, trophies, articles, and historic surf boards.
